The Coyote - Armed Reconnaissance on Eight Wheels

Originally known as the LAV-Recce, the Coyote is equipped with a highly sophisticated suite of sensors including radar, enhanced video cameras, forward-looking infrared, and laser rangefinding. The result is probably the most sophisticated military surveillance vehicle in the world and the CF is justifiably proud of the Coyote. The basic vehicle is a direct descendant of the 8x8 LAV-25 (above) built by GM Canada for the US Marines (758 vehicles) between 1982 and 1985.

The Coyote - a Canid with Extra Sensory Perception

Mechanically related to the Bison APC, the Coyote is easily distinguished by its 25mm-armed Delco turret. An obvious, more dramatic difference is the extensible mast which can be raised 10m from the portside of the Coyote's rear hull. By elevating these sensors, the Coyote is able to perform its surveillance mission while the vehicle itself is competely hidden by landform or foliage. Some vehicles* carry tripod- mounted sensors which can be discreetly positioned away from the receiving Coyote (see below left and middle right).

'... Right up above the mast did stand ... ' - the Sensors

The 'hi-rez' video camera, 'FLIR' thermal imager, and laser rangefinder are mounted at the very top of the mast. Just below is the mounting platform for the surveillance radar. These sensors can detect a moving man at 3km and a moving vehicle up to 12km away?
