Developers. Kamov helicopter complex (Russia)

The Kamov organization was formed from the experimental autogyro production facilities in Moscow in the year 1940. But the organization became the object of Stalin's anger in 1943 and it was shut-down for a certain period. In 1948 they were pardoned and they were reorganized under N.I.Kamov's leadership. OKB Kamov, whose first aim of establishment was to develop experimental and prototype helicopters for the Navy became of the leading helicopter designers and producers of the world.

Kamov's first project was the Ka-10 light helicopter designed for the Navy. As this inicdent established the basis of the co-axial rotor theory it is also celebrated as the birthday of the Naval Aviation in Russia.

OKB Kamov worked as a design team concentrated on the naval applications for a long time. As a result of these works Ka-15, later on Ka-25 and Ka-27 which are nowadays still in use were created. Ka-15 was also a helicopter with co-axial main rotors and without a tail rotor. Similar designs were also made in the USA.

The great popularity gain of Kamov became with the appearance of Ka-50 and Ka-52 which were the followers of the Mi-24 philosophy. A modified model of Ka-50 generated together with the Israeli avistion and electronics firms was offered to the Turkish Armed Forces as Ka-50-2 'Erdogan'. A co-production of IAI and Kamov is one of the best today.

Regardless of the crises in the Russian Aviation Sector, Kamov is continuing its works in an economical powerfull situation. In addition to designing new models for the civil aviation, they are also working on an advanced model of Ka-50/Ka-52 called Ka-60.

In 1999 Kamov helicopter design company considerably improved its financial positions in comparison with the previous year. This was achieved mainly through sales of helicopters to foreign customers. This was announced by the company's deputy chief designer Veniamin Kasyanikov. According to him, in 1999 Kamov company received profits from sales of over 6 Ka-28 helicopters, delivered to China by Kumertaussky APO manufacturing company. Kamov will also receive funds from sales of Ka-31 helicopters to India. Additional long-range detection systems will be installed on Ka-31 helicopters by the Nizhegorodsky Radioelectronics NII."
