Armies of the world. Belgium

Population: 10 179 thousand people. The military budget is 2,2 billion dollars (2001). The regular forces are 39 420 people. The reserve - 100 500 people, including Land forces - 71 500, air force - 10 000, naval forces - 3 300, medical service - 15 700. Recruitment for the army is voluntary. Mobilization resources - 2,6 million, including 2,1 million able-bodied men.

Land forces: 26 400 people, a mechanized division, a battle protection division, an airborne brigade, a detached group of army-co-operation aircraft, territorial defense: 11 light infantry battalions.

Arms: 132 tanks Leopard - 1A5, 218 infantry fighting vehicles YPR-765, 119 armoured reconnaissance vehicles, 322 armored troop carriers (187 M113, 95 Spartan, 50 Pandur), 159 towed howitzers, 272 field artillery (including 108 self-propelled guns with calibre of 155 mm), 268 mortars, 420 antitank missile systems Milan, 118 portable surface-to-air missile systems Mistral, 51 antiaircraft emplacements Cheetah, 10 planes BN-2A, 74 helicopters (28 battle A109-BA, 18 reconnaissance A109-A, 28 SA-318of general purpose), 18 pilotless vehicles (of them 3 Hunters).

Air force: 8 600 people, 90 war-planes (45 mothballed), combat helicopters are not available. Tactical elements: 6 fighter and bomber air squadrons, 2 transport air squadrons, a helicopter medevac squadron, 3 training air squadrons. Planes and helicopters: 90 F-16 (A and B), 6 Mirage - 5BA, -BR and -BD (mothballed), 11 C-12OH, 3 HS.748, 2 Falcon-20, Falcon-900B, 5 SW-111 Marlin, 10 CM-170, 29 Alpha Jet, 5 Sea King, 33 SF-260.

Naval forces: 2 560 people (including 280 women), 3 frigates Vilingen, 8 minesweepers (Agressive, 7 Aster), patrol boats, 2 command ships, hydrographic vessels, training vessels, 6 towboats, 3 helicopters SA-316B.
