Population: 1 029 548 thousand people. The military budget is 15,6 billion dollars (2001). The regular forces are 1 263 000 people. The reserve is 535 000 people, including land forces - 300000, air force - 140000, naval forces - 55000, territorial armies - 40 000. Militarized formations - 1 066 000 people, including national security forces - 7 400. Special militarized forces - 3 000, special frontier troops - 9 000, Rashtri riflemen - 36 000, outguard forces - 31 000, the police on the Indian-Tibetan frontier - 30000, Assam riflemen - 52 000, the railway protection forces - 70 000, the central industrial security forces - 88 600, the police of central reserve - 160000, frontier security troops - 174 000, coastguard - about 5 000, the armed provincial police - 400 000. Recruitment for the army is voluntary. Mobilization resources - 270 million people, including 159,7 million able-bodied men.

Land forces: 1 100 thousand people, 5 military districts, 4 field armies, 1 army corps, 35 divisions (3 armoured, 4 fast response, 18 infantry, 9 mountainous, 1 artillery), 1 rocket regiment, 15 detached brigades (7 armoured, 5 infantry, 2 mountainous, 1 airborne), 4 anti-aircraft artillery, 3 engineer brigades, 1 rocket regiment. Territorial army: 355 detached units.

Arms: 3 - 5 tactical rocket systems Prithvi, 3 444 tanks (700 T-55, 1500 T-72, 40 T-90, 1 200 Vidzhayanta, 14 Ardzhun), 90 light tanks PT-76, 1 350 infantry fighting vehicles, 100 BRDM-2, 317 armored troop carriers, 4 175 towed guns, 180 self-propelled guns, 150 MLRS, more than 1 200 mortars, 4 024 antiaircraft guns, about 1 725 surface-to-air missile systems, 150 army-co-operation helicopters.

Air force: 110 000 people, 772 war-planes, 32 combat helicopters. Planes and helicopters: 73 MiG-29, 10 Su-30MK, 79 MiG-23 (BN, MF and UM), 147 MiG-27, 317 MiG-21 (BIS, MF, PFMA, FL and U), 94 Jaguar, 8 MiG-25 (P and U), 35 Mirage-2000 (N and TN), 12 Canberra (B58, PR-57 and PR-67), 2 Boeing 707, 4 Boeing 737.4 HS-748, 105 An-32, 43 Do-228, 25 Il-76, 120 Kiran-1, 56 Kiran-2, 38 Hunter (F-56, T-66), 34 Mi-25 and Mi-35, 80 Mi-8, 37 Mi-17, 10 Mi-26, 20 Chitak, 2 Mi-24, more than 280 surface-to-air guided missile systems.

Naval forces: 53 000 people (including 1 000 marines, about 2 000 women). Operative commands: Western, East, Southern, Far East. Naval aircraft: 5 000 people. Squadrons: planes - 8 (2 fighter assault squadrons, 2 patrol air squadrons, 1 reconnaissance air squadron, 1 transport air squadron, 2 training air squadrons); helicopters - 9 (6 anti-submarine helicopter squadrons, 1 SAR squadron, 2 training squadrons). Planes - 105 (21 Sea Harrier FRS.51, 24 MiG-29K, 10 Tu-142, 27 Do-228, 5 Il-38, 18 Defender), helicopters - 81 (24 Sea King Mk42/VB/C, 17 Ka-28, 23 SA-319B, 17 Ka-25).

Coastguard: about 5 000 people, 12 patrol ships (3 Samar, 9 Vikram), 21 patrol boats, 16 boats. Planes - 17 Do-228, helicopters - 15 Chitak.
